Free Medical Screening Camp at MRI

On march 20th, Free Medical checkup is conducted at MRI VTI, thanks to Dr. Devi Devaraj.

Today from 12.30 to 3.30 pm she single handed checked 41 students mainly girls and women who attended the classes during that period. She was assisted by Dr Ansuya and Rajaram.

The camp was very successful as it gave these students awareness of problems they have if any and some of them were not aware.

Medicines or tonics were prescribed where ever necessary.Some of them have been advised for follow up treatment.

The medical screening camp was appreciated by one and all with a request to have the programme quaterly so that awareness of their health condition becomes known to initiate follow-up.

Farewell of 10th Std students at Sir M. V. PUC College

Today, we were invited to a Farewell Function organized by the Management of Sir M Visweshwariah PU College at Airport Road for the students of Standard X who will passing out.The Secretary and Asst Sec of the Management were present along with all the teachers and about 130 out of the 180 students of the class.

The exams are scheduled from 31.3 to 5.4.08 for SSLC.

On this occasion, since Manish & Deepak were pre occupied, I invited Dy Director of Vocational Education Mr Ramachandra to come and introduce the Modular Employable Scheme initiated by the Government of India.

Speaking on the occasion he urged the students to put up their best in the remaining 15 days and make them selves and their parents proud by their performance which has been encouraged by the Rotary Indiranagar for the last 14 weeks. He expressed great satisfaction that such a novel scheme has been functioning at this school for the last 2 years and both the past Vice Principal and the current vice principals were praise for the self less dedication of Rotarians in helping these students.

Further, he explained how the GOI has presented this scheme and only those who attended classes regularly, could easily pass in the exams which are mainly practical, with 20% theory and 10% for the personality and presentation. They will be awarded Certificates for each course they study and will also get a refund of the Fees and Assessment fees paid.

The students were thrilled and welcomed the scheme and at least 50% of those present have shown interest to enroll before the 10the April 2008 because they know that they will be learning a skill during the holidays for Free. and have to spend only for traveling.

Mr K M Mallappa Reddy, Sec and Mr Appai Reddy, Jt Sec were all praises for the Rotary for their valuable assistance to the student community of their college. Photos will be coming shortly.

On 14-3-2008 Mr Nagaraj Murthy from the NCVT visited the MRI VTI and gave a briefing to the faculty members and cleared their doubts aout the assessment procedures.

Teacher’s Take: Innovation in Education

Innovation in education:

We’ve compiled 200 mathematics formula, concepts and questions and distributed those to the students for practice.
We’ve identified a group of 15 academically weakest students in the class and are paying special attention to them. Everyday, after regular classes, those students are given 1-2 hours of extra classes.
During Sunday’s special classes, these students are taught from 8.30AM-6PM. We’re determined to get all of these students pass the SSLC exam.During Sunday’s special classes, all students are given test papers, based on last year’s exam, for practice. Students evaluate test copies of each other and give feedback.
We’ve conducted Parents-Teachers meeting at regular interval to guide parents and get suggestions from them. This parents-teachers coalition is helping in improving students attendance.

MRVTI has played a big role in enabling us to work towards better future of students. The ‘Sunday’ tutorials, organized by them, is making qualitative change in students performance and we are seeing tangible results. Thanks to them.

Teacher’s Take: Expecting Better Results

For improvement of SSLC results, we’ve conducted special classes for 10th standard students from Jun 2007 - Dec 2007 from 9AM - 10AM everyday. From 3rd Jan 2008-13th Mar 2008 we are conducting group studies everyday from 9AM-10.30AM and 4.15PM-5PM. Study groups have been formed of 10 students and 1 teacher. In continuing our endeavor of helping students getting better results in SSLC, we asked MRVTI to help us through their tutorial programs on Sundays. These special classes started from Jan 1st week from 9AM-1PM. Along with the teachers from our school, volunteers from MRVTI have helped us in conducting these classes. Because of these special classes, and the earlier effort we did, we are expecting 75%-80% students would successfully pass the exam with good results.
Note that being a government-aided school, we give admissions to students who are mostly from economically weaker section. Not only this, we also give admission to students coming from Telegu and Tamil education medium. This makes our job really challenging and that’s the reason we need to put extra effort to make sure that students pass the exam with good results.

Teacher’s Take: Sunday Tutorials are Effective

The performance of SSLC March 2006 and March 2007 of our school is given below. For March 2007 SSLC batch MRVTI has helped in conducting ‘Sunday Classes’ for 13 Sundays, each Sunday of 4 hours tutorials from 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM for all SSLC students of our school. I’ve found improvement in results - not only number of students passing SSLC increased, but in general, all students performed better and got better results.

Key Issues & Challenges:

Motivating students to come on Sunday for tutorials is a big challenge. Providing them snacks (milk & biscuits) and inspirational lectures and guidance by MRVTI has been a great help.
Teachers usually want to spend Sundays with their family. It’s really demanding for them to take on any work on Sundays. We have successfully persuaded 4-6 teachers of my school to come on Sundays and take classes. Through MRVTI’s incentive scheme of Rs 100 per hour per teacher, We are compensating the teachers for the additional time and effort they are putting up.
Total involvement with the students is essential for the success of our mission of shaping their futures. Since most of students belong to economically lower class, they don’t get appropriate environment at their home for study. So our objective has been to give them less of home-assignments and focus more on classroom-assignments. This approach not only provide students with supporting environment for their study, but they also work together with other students for a common goal. We’ve made study group of students comprising of brighter and weaker students.
Teachers have identified 5-8 academically weakest students in the classes and are giving them personal attention.
Teachers are also using past questions and exam blue-prints to give students practice test papers.
One major problem that we are facing is, out of 160 students, only 85 are attending ‘Sunday Classes’. We need to find out ways to increase students involvements.
Girls are, in general, doing better than boys.

FREE SSLC TUTORIALS 2007-08

Introduction

When an economically weak student fails in SSLC his/her fate is sealed and the chances of being mislead into perverted activities are enhanced. The rate of failures in SSLC is very high. To address this problem, as in the last year (2006-07) MRVTI is organizing Free SSLC tutorials under the project Parivarthan. These tutorials are conducted in 8 government schools around Bangalore.

Total students attending this program: 1000
As part of this program, tutorials are conducted every sunday morning (9am - 1pm) by dedicated teachers of the same school. This program was started on 16th December 2007 and will conclude on 23rd March 2008. Subjects covered are Maths, English, Hindi, Kanada, General Science and Social Science.
To motivate students, Parivarthan provides hot badam milk and glucose biscuits to each of 1000 students.
To motivate teachers, Parivarthan pays them Rs 100 per hour.
