Meeting with Parents of SSLC Students
Mr Venkatesh, Headmaster of Government High School, Hoody, Bangalore, has taken a unique initiative to organize meeting with parents to partner with then in providing supportive environment to the children. On 18th Jan, we visited one such meeting. A total of 115 parents came for the meeting. Mr Venkatesh explained to them the purpose of Sunday special classes and the progress of children because of such classes.
We talked to many of those parents. They were really enthusiastic about helping their children take study more seriously and providing suitable environment at home. I should note that most of those parents are from economic lower strata and themselves illiterate. They are barely able to meet the ends. At the same time, they are committed to help their children for better future.

Plan to include more schools in SSLC Project
Meeting of Dy Director of Public Instruction with Head-masters of Government High Schools in East Taluk
Date: Sunday 4th Jan 2009
Venue: Government High School, Hoodi
Time: 10am to 1pm
For the 1st time in many years, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction & Block Education Officer assembled on a bright Sunday morning on 4th Jan 2009 at the Government High School Hoodi to motivate the Head Masters to improve the result for the SSLC Exams. M/s Yashoda Bopanna DDPI & Mr. Nanjundaiah BEO, Rtn R. K. Makhija, Dr. Ansuya, Mr. Deepak & Rtn. Manish were welcomed by Mr. Venkatesh, District Level award winning teacher from Hoodi School.
By 10am the meeting was called to order. In all 14 head masters assembled. The audience was introduced to the activities of Makhija Rotary Vocational centre primarily for training of underprivileged & failed students in learning a skill and be self employed in 90 days. Later on the projecst of coaching SSLC students was added on in order to reduce the alarming rate of failures which stood at 60% each year. Since 3 years in a row, coaching for SSLC students is carried out on 14 Sunday mornings at their own schools with the help of dedicated Head Masters and Teachers. Year 2007-08 witnessed a further fall in the passes. But those who attended MRI Sponsored SSLC Coaching classes fared well.
Smt. Yashoda appreciated the activities of MRI and urged the headmasters to rise to the occasion & grab the golden opportunity to work ceaselessly and improve the results. These children of today are the further leaders of India and need the support at all levels. If just for 3 months they are induced and motivated to put in their best effort, they can reap the harvest by climbing the ladder to success or without our help they can become criminals and resort to unhealthy activities and be a nuisance to society. In her clarion call, Mrs Bopanna infused positive waves and beckoned the gathering to improve their skills and work hard to better the results. The HMs then set their own achievable targets and have vowed to perform and be accountable. She reminded that in the present setup the need of the hour is performers and complacent teachers and HMs could make room for performers. “The future of India lies in your hands and you need to awake, rise and stop not until the goal is reached”.
In the interactive session, she answered the problems faced by HMs and promptly assured them of assistance. There is a shortage of English Language teachers and qualified, experienced volunteers are invited to assist wherever feasible. Some of the schools have requested the Rotary to adopt their schools as well, as they need help. Presidents of Rotary Clubs of Whitefield, Jeevanbheema Nagar, Diamond District and IT corridor could take up these schools as they are in close vicinity to their areas.
Our Team with Rtn Manish Katyan, Major Deepak Iyer are ready and are willing to guide and assist where ever required for this cause of Literacy forCommunity Service.
